Our Department of Interior Architecture was established in 1991 within the Faculty of Fine Arts at Anadolu University. As one of the founding departments of the Faculty of Architecture and Design, which was restructured in 2011, the Department of Interior Architecture has continued its educational activities under Eskişehir Technical University since 2018.
In terms of its historical development, interior architecture is situated within the fundamental fields of design and art, both as a profession and as a discipline of education. Employing creativity as a method of innovation, interior architecture is concerned not only with designing interior spaces in accordance with users’ needs, preferences, and requirements, but also with every type of space that encompasses the contemporary notion of the “interior-within.” Possessing a broad scope of subject matter and application, interior architecture creates value in every environment utilized in human life. In this context, interior architecture addresses spaces used by individuals by evaluating them in terms of practical, aesthetic, and symbolic functions in accordance with their physical needs, psychological characteristics, and activities.
Through this perspective, interior architecture embodies an approach that questions the concept of the “interior” at every scale, ranging from product design to urban scale, as necessitated by the contemporary age. In light of these characteristics, interior architecture also provides opportunities to produce works across various branches of the arts.
Within the curriculum of our Department of Interior Architecture, the “Interior Architecture Project” and “Furniture Design” courses, in which diverse design problems and conceptual designs are evaluated and resolved, constitute the foundation of the educational program. In addition, the curriculum includes numerous theoretical and practical field courses. Furthermore, to facilitate the implementation of designed products, the department is equipped with a Wood Workshop and a Model-Making Workshop.
Graduates of the department are expected to be individuals who can identify and investigate issues related to the functionality and quality of spaces; develop designs by integrating creativity and aesthetic knowledge; provide expertise in construction supervision, building systems, interior construction knowledge, fixtures, materials, and equipment; and prepare the related drawings and documentation through the education and experience they have acquired.
